Several years ago, while facilitating a treatment group for adolescents involved in the justice system, I experienced a moment that would profoundly shape the vision behind Mind Reneural.

We were watching Disney's Moana.

Near the end of the film, Moana finds herself standing before Te Kā, a terrifying creature consumed by anger and destruction. Everything about this creature seems to invite fear, resistance, or retreat.

But Moana does something unexpected.

She recognizes something beneath the anger, beneath the pain, and beneath the monstrous exterior. She sees not simply what this creature has become, but who she was before something precious was taken from her.

As Moana approaches, she offers a remarkable reminder: “This does not define you.”

I'll never forget the feeling that overcame me in that moment. And I couldn't help but wonder whether some of the young men sitting in that room were experiencing something similar.

These were adolescents whose lives had often been viewed through the lens of their worst choices, their trauma, and the labels placed upon them. Accountability was an important part of our work, but so was helping them understand that their actions and experiences did not represent the entirety of who they were.

What if beneath the anger, shame, grief, addiction, and patterns of self-destruction, there remains something within us that has never truly been lost—only hidden?

And what if meaningful healing begins not by running from those painful places, but by finding the courage to face them?
